Obstetricians oppose the proposed baby hospital

The Calgary Herald has reported that a number of doctors do not think the proposed new "baby hospital" is a good idea.

Instead of giving birth at Foothills Hospital, which is a complete hospital with all the departments you might need in the event of complications of labour and delivery, the new baby hospital would be a stand-alone place. So if something goes wrong during a baby's birth, the baby might be very well cared for - but the mother may not be.

Is this a case of doctors disagreeing with doctors, or politicians ignoring expert advice?

I am not comfortable with a plan the obstetricians think is risky.

But am I being naive to think that the doctors' motives are pure? I can't think what secret agenda they might be promoting, so I'm on their side in this one.
